The shield wire of the OBS3 sensor cable doesn’t actually connect to anything on the sensor, so it’s okay to leave that floating, especially if you’re just testing the sensor. The green and black wires both definitely need to be connected to GND or the sensor won’t work properly. Both the high range and low range should read around 0 NTU when t…[Read more]

Thank you for the information. I will try the voltmeter for confirmation.
Can a 7-year-old OBS3+ turb sensor go bad if it has been sitting in a climate-controlled room? It was probably used only a couple of times for testing indoors but has been powered off for at least 6 years. I get a positive reading when exposed in the open air, but when I…[Read more]

Shannon Hicks replied to the topic battery size options in the forum Mayfly Data Logger 1 month, 3 weeks ago
It’s possible to use a battery that big, as long as the polarization of the JST connector is the same. However, we rarely have the need for a large battery with our standard stations with sensors like CTD, turbidity, or oxygen, even with cellular telemetry ever 5 minutes. If you use a really large battery, you have to make sure your solar p…[Read more]

Those old Campbell OBS3+ turbidity sensors will either flatline or go negative when they fail. We started deploying dozens of that sensor model about 8 or 9 years ago and almost all of them have been removed from the field in the past few years due to failure. It looks like your station is 8 years old so you got more life out of it than m…[Read more]

I am noticing negative turbidity readings (https://monitormywatershed.org/sites/NJJC1S/). The turbidity sensor is clean and is situated freely in the water column. I unplugged and replugged the turbidity’s grove cable. Everything in the logger box looks dry and fine. Is my sensor dead or are there other troubleshooting steps I should do? thank you.

Are there any negatives in choosing the 10050 mAh battery https://www.adafruit.com/product/5035? Size wise it is the same as the 6600mAh that you have listed on your site https://www.envirodiy.org/battery-options-mayfly/. I’m thinking the higher mAh would maintain the voltage better. Or does the long recharge time put a hinderance on things. I’m…[Read more]

Thank you so much.
I am not using the AWS stuff for now but I will be deploying mosquitto on cloud at some time.
if this old firmware create problem at that point, I will update the firmware.
Thank you again. -
Sara Damiano replied to the topic EspressifESP32 in the forum Mayfly Data Logger 2 months ago
Yes, those are because of the old firmware. If you’ve got it working, it may not be worth updating, but it should eliminate those work-around.
If you want to use custom SSL certificates, upgrade. The only way to push custom certificates with the old firmware (or with an ESP8266) is to use a python script to write the memory blocks with the new…[Read more]

I am using EnviroDIY fork. Until now everything is working. I am able to make both http post, and mqtt connection.
I checked and mine esp32 firmware version is 2.4.0. So,Is it because of this lower version, I had to do some hack around for ssl connection?
Below is the part of workaround I coded to make it work with hydroserver.void…

Are you using the original TinyGSM or the EnviroDIY fork? The EnviroDIY fork is far ahead of the original right now. (It’s on my to-do list to have a proper PR.)
I’d (strongly) recommend updating your AT firmware. The current version of TinyGSM on the EnivroDIY fork expects firmware >= 3.2.0.0. Because of changes in the memory mapping for SS…[Read more]

Were you able to connect to your MQTT broker?
It looks like you’re working from the modem component within Modular Sensors. That component wraps TinyGSM and adds physical pin support for power management. But the wrapping makes it a bit confusing because you have to access objects with pointers and creator functions. And if you’re trying to us…[Read more]

Ah. That example is written for the current “master” branch of the library, not the latest polished release. I’m way overdue for a new release, but there are some bugs I still need to fix.
Try starting from this example instead, which is matched to library release 0.37.0: h…[Read more]

We’re really excited to partner with Labcrafter so they can be a source of our products to people in Europe. As for sensors, the Maxbotix MB7389 you mentioned is probably your best bet for low cost ultrasonic rangefinding. Just be sure to order the TTL version so it’ll work straight into the Mayfly board (the RS232 sensor would require an i…[Read more]

I’m working on building a sensor station using a Mayfly Data Logger v. 1.1, EnviroDIY cellular bee, a Hydros 21 CTD sensor. I am using the sketch EnviroDIY_Monitoring_Kit.ino and the Modular Sensor Libraries v0.37.0. I am having a difficult time getting my sketch to compile.
