Hi James, we regularly had this problem when using the Decagon CTD-10s connected to a DIY Arduino Mega data logger. We ended up taking the median value of 10 measurements taken 1x/second every 5 mins. However, what eventually worked (if I’m remembering this correctly; this was my dissertation research done in 2016-2019) was clamping an RF ferrite balun filter to the cables. They looked something like this: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/fair-rite-products-corp./0444173951/8594098?utm_adgroup=Ferrite%20Cores%20-%20Cables%20and%20Wiring&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping_Product_Filters_NEW&utm_term=&utm_content=Ferrite%20Cores%20-%20Cables%20and%20Wiring&gclid=CjwKCAiApfeQBhAUEiwA7K_UH7XcVuubBeU3WlGAQFSizFtYSRyiAbgXnIgNb0TLWobKsUVKiNRBVxoCfTAQAvD_BwE

I think it must’ve been noise interference from somewhere on our board. Hope this helps! I have code you’re welcome too if you’re interested.

        Hey Pat,

Thanks for your help…we’ve now been able to successfully register the FONA and ping the internet. We’re still not able to post to the internet though. I’m going to going to make anohter separate post for this question in the hope that others will also see it since it’s a new question.

Thanks again…perhaps you can shed some light on this issue also?

        Cheers,
        Stephanie

          Hi Veronica,

I’d suggest looking at the Atlas Scientific sensors…they have one for measuring electrical conductivity across a range of salinities: https://www.atlas-scientific.com/conductivity.html. We’ve been using them with fairly good success for the last several years. They do foul rather quickly if there is iron in your system, and we’ve found that they do require periodic (if not monthly) calibration. On the up side, however, they are relatively small and inexpensive and come with available C++/Arduino code and an circuit that does all the data processing. The tip is 12 mm in diameter but the other end connected to the cable is actually a little wider so I’m not certain it will fit if you need to extend the probe some length down a well. I’m not in the office today but if you like I can measure the top width tomorrow when I return.

Good luck! I’ll be interested to find out what others suggest.

Update: Got the proof-of-life (POL) code on the Mega to work using hardware serial on the Mega (Serial2) to communicate to the Pro Mini POL software serial (digital pins 2/3 RX/TX).

            Thanks for all your help!

My new compile errors (verbose) are provided below; as you can see they’re similar to what I was getting before I downloaded the new SDI-12 library.

My apologies for asking very rudimentary questions. While I’ve been using Arduinos now for a couple of years, I am still very much a novice at C++, much less how libraries work, etc.. I’m in the process of reading the info in the links you provided.

Also, I tried to attach my .ino file but got an upload error last night (“Upload Errors: SedPondV11.ino: Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.). Isn’t the upload option how we’re supposed to include code when posting questions to the forums? Am I doing something wrong?

              Thanks,
              Steph

I tried updating the SDI-12 library but am getting similar errors. I’m still looking in to this, but am wondering whether I can use hardware serial ports on the Mega to communicate with software serial ports on the Mini?

                Thanks for the oh-so-rapid responses.

Hmmm, now I don’t see where I saw the 2.5W reference. Perhaps I was mixing it up with the Sodaq Mbili. That’s good to know. At least one of the locations I’m intending to sample in the eastern KY coalfields, and possibly others at a different site here in GA, are very forested. I’ll have to try to run the solar panel out to a sunnier spot to ensure it’ll work long-term.

Are you using a cellular modem or XBee type device on any of your sites? If so, how often are you uploading, and how is the batter supply in those cases?

                  Thanks for responding so quikly!

Hi, I note that the specs for the Mayfly state they only support a 2.5W solar panel. Here I see that you’re able to connect a 3.2W panel. How about a 6W panel (e.g., https://www.adafruit.com/products/1525) or 9W panel (https://www.adafruit.com/products/2747) or up to a 20-100W? We’re running Arduino Megas in the field hooked up to 12V marine grade batteries recharged via a larger 20-100W panel (e.g., https://www.amazon.com/ECO-WORTHY-20W-Solar-Panel-Polycrystalline/dp/B00PFGP0EA) and solar panel charge controller.

I should add that we’re powering a lot of sensors and components (Atlas Scientific specific conductance, BME280, Dallas 1-wire temp, XBee, FONA 808, Druck pressure transducer, LCD screen, real time clock, SD card, etc.).

                    Thanks,
                    Stephanie

Dave, again, sounds interesting, but not sure LoRa would work for us. We’re monitoring water chemistry at a remote mine site in eastern KY and want to push the data out to the internet. LoRa sounds more appropriate for IoT in urban settings. From what I’m gathering, cellular seems like our best bet, and it’s going to have to a carrier that’s using AT&T or Verizon, or a local provider. I don’t think T-mobile is available out there.

                      Neil, thanks for the summary.

Yes, Neil, the FONA library is wonderful…we’re not really inteested in developing all that code (or figuring out each protocol in great detail) for each and every sensor/piece of hardware we’re using, so having a library is key.

You asked which Arduino platform we’re using…it’s the Mega. We may also use a Raspberry Pi as the data manager for cellular, but I’m not sure that’s necessary.
